This type of sad news happens more frequently than we like. Sometimes it comes directly from a family member or friend, sometimes through the grapevine of our current student body, other times someone happens upon a story in the paper. But it's always too frequent.
Today we heard about C., who entered PYB a couple of years ago when she was just 17. After she earned her GED with us she left to go to work full-time, yet PYB staff have still been working with her on a regular basis to help her reach her long-term career goals.
Today we heard that C. was in a car accident yesterday afternoon, one that landed her in critical condition at one of Portland's top hospitals. Today we are thinking of C., and how a young life of promise can sometimes be taken away too soon.
